Nick Law

Pet baby Macaque and Orang Asli kid, Cameron Highlands. Feb 09.

Orang Asli is the Malay name for the indigenous people dwelling in the forest of Peninsular Malaysia and translates literally as "original people".

The kids and the monkey kept each other entertained as we looked round the village and tried our hand at shooting the darted blow pipes. The pressure put on these people from the outside world was evident. I couldn't help think that the kids were stuck in a hard situation, they communicated with and wore clothes like the tourists who passed through frequently with their money, and yet they were expected to continue living in the jungle as a 'primitive people'.
